In this task, I annotated three college magazine covers and wrote a little about certain points that caught my eye. They are as separate posts unfortunately, as they would not fit as one.
The title of this magazine is very effective because it is the biggest piece of writing on the page and in all capitals, making it easy to see from afar, which is a good selling device for when it is being advertised on shelves. Also, although the image is slightly overlapping the title, it is still very prominent and we can still see what it is called.
The colour of the masthead is also just as effective because it is in the colour red. Red advertises the colour associated with love, showing how the consumer will 'love' this magazine and will keep coming back for more. It is also a very bold colour, which also contributes to it being easy to see from the shelves among its competitors.
The fact that its title is 'college' makes it a good magazine because it advertises straight away what it is about without anyone having to pick it up, which is very effective because it allows the reader to see who the target audience is.
The image is of who is presumed to be a college student, and is dressed in the colours red, white and blue – the main colours of the magazine design and also the colours associated with freedom. This is effective because the reader can see what the colour scheme is and represents how college is a step towards being free and your own being. The way the image is overlapping the title allows the magazine to pull all the components together and add depth to the cover, making it more consumer appealing.
Also, the image of the girl shows her smiling, showing the reader that college makes her happy and that she is also happy to be the cover girl for this issue, indicating that she likes and purchases this magazine and that it is worth the read. This is a good tactic to use, as it connects the readers to happiness and shows that it will bring them joy if they read this magazine.
The fact that she is wearing shorts is also a good way to advertise the college as being a nice place to be as it shows how the students aren’t phased that she has her legs showing, showing that the college she goes to is full of mature people and that if you went there then they would act like adults and not children.
The colour scheme of this magazine is red, white and blue, showing straight away that this is an American magazine, indicating that it will contain American slang, spelling and approaches. This allows the reader to see what kind of style it will be and where the magazine is from.
This colour scheme is very effective because it is the colours that most knowingly represent the act of freedom. This helps the reader latch on to the idea that the articles will talk about the act of free life in and out of college life and how it can be achieved, which would make them feel empowered and want to make them but this magazine.
Also, this colour scheme is great because it is a bold pallet and so is easy to see when surrounded amongst its competition on the shelves. These colours are easy to be seen and are known as very attractive colours and do not clash with each other and so are easy on the eyes and are a good combination to have as a colour scheme to attract potential customers.
The fact that it is made up of the American flag colours is effective because they are widely known and so will attract a wider audience and bring in more profit for the makers and so increasing the budget available.
